What can we learn from Penn State?

After the tragedy at Penn State, Darkness to Light commissioned a landmark survey of American attitudes toward sexual abuse.
Incredibly, while 92% of Americans believe child sexual abuse is a major problem, only 7% of Americans believe institutions are appropriately addressing the issue. This enormous disconnect shows that Americans are ready to make a change -- our nation is ready to confront this issue.
Ask the organizations your child interacts with what policies they have in place for preventing and reporting child sexual abuse. Do they screen employees and volunteers? Is child abuse prevention training required? What are their procedures for responding to allegations of abuse? Use these talking points to get the conversation started.
At Family Nurturing Center, we are encouraged that people recognize the impact of the issue, and we are more committed than ever to ensuring that people have the tools to prevent this crime against children. As a result of not educating or understanding how child sexual abuse is defined and how to respond, what is the economic impact? What are the costs to your community? As a tax-payer you'll be shocked to find out the second most expensive victim crime, behind murder, is costing the U.S. $35 Billion annually.
